World production of rice in 2015-16 is around 469.3 million Mt, 95% is Indica rice and only 15% are Japonica rice. China is the largest grain rice producing country (145.5 million Mt, 55% Indica, 45% Japonica), and Chinese farmers are the most productive producers for rice with yield of 6.6 Mt/ha.

 

Biocentury has started its rice breeding program for hybrid and OP variety of both Indica and Japonica. The 2-line super hybrid rice variety YII900 achieved a remarkable yield record of 15.4 Mt/ha in 2014. Conventional germplasm improvement, inbred breeding and hybrid testing have been carried out in many breeding stations to be adapted to different geological and climate conditions. In addition, marker-assistant breeding and genomic editing have also been used to speed up the breeding process.
